Career decisions are so huge that you dare not make mistakes. Even though mistakes are part of life and can be maneuvered as typical of human situations, you still have to apply tact. After all, “wisdom is profitable to direct”. This is because, an inappropriate career decision will take a toll on both your time and efforts, leaving you with minimal returns. While making your career decisions, HR personnel @Obiora Kenneth Chinwuba advises that you carefully consider a few things. In his exact words, are sincere highlights on three major considerations —
As a corporate career person, here are a few things you must always evaluate to decide whether you are to remain in your job, switch careers or accept that new offer.
- Value creation.
- Earning (Compensation & benefits).
- Learning / Development.
Value creation
This is the key to your career success, at every point in your career stage, you must have the value creation mindset. People employ you to solve a problem, and the first and most vital aspect of your vocation is to bring value. Even if you are a trainee or an intern, you are expected to bring value. When you carry and bring value, then you position yourself for every other thing.
Earning
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, you have to earn. As you grow, develop yourself and offer more value, your earning power should be increasing. If your earning become stagnant for a long then there is a problem, either you aren’t offering value, growing or you are at the wrong place.
At first, while starting, your aim should be to learn and grow but don’t be at that stage for long. As you progress in life and your career, your needs (I am not even talking of ‘wants’) increase and so should your earning. If where you are can’t afford to give you desired to earn then you may have to access yourself, maybe you need to reskill, upskill or you just need to leave and find a better paying option because maybe the place you are can’t pay you what you desire.
Learning and Development
Where you are, where you want to go, is there/will there be learning opportunities?
Wherever you find yourself, if you aren’t learning new things and developing, then there is a problem. Now I am not taking personal development, you can develop yourself all you want, take courses etc., but if your job is not offering you the opportunity to learn while creating value then there is a problem. If you find yourself where year in year out you don’t learn any new thing then it is time to rethink.
Summarily, ensure to always add value, be a problem solver, don’t just be a number. Earn well and demand better earning when and if need be. Your job should bring learning and development opportunities.
May we all succeed.
