As controversial as this issue may seem, it is very much needed to be addressed because of the constant misconceptions that surround the idea of music, which do not bear its base on any religion but on abstracts which are even a greater part of the society and even a unifier at that. Truth be told, music integrates people of different tribes and religious background and sets the pace for a common ground to flourish..
Someone I know shares a particular sentiment, which even, is the major sentiment regards the issue… “A lot of talented Christian musicians have locked themselves in the walls of a church sentiments, by false assumptions, bound in fear and ignorance, and do not realise, because of the myopic reactions of religious fanatics how impactful their secular lyrics could be in shaping the society. In his contextual view, he opines that Secular music is any music that is not sung in church, and does not contain in its lyrics the names of the divine members of the holy trinity (God, His son and The Holy spirit). He also calls for an agreement that Music is a profession just as Engineering, Law, Medicine, Teaching etc and people go as far as having a contemporary ‘doctorate’ in it, especially, by practice and this expected agreement calls for the fact that “if there are Christians who practice law, engineering, medicine etc, then there are also Christians who practice music and it’s secular diversities, as a profession. Abstracts like love, freedom, environment, human rights are important aspects of the society and many people, choose to connect with what these concepts represent to them and their impact in the society and relevance in their individual lives.”
Truthfully however, there are several secular music models in the bible. It almost skipped my mind. King Solomon of all times was a ‘badarse’ love musician, all the lyrics of his songs are filled with “many” things that religious people of this clime will frown at, if it wasn’t written in the scriptures. Even David, God’s favourite man, was a “secular” dancer.😏
Sincerely, I think the scriptures were written to direct and shapen our ideologies and let us know that we can actually be anything and profess anything as long as we do not hurt anyone or tell a lie or do profane things. So if that is the case, then, I do not see why a Christian, whose calling is to speak the “secular” truth in a secular world, should be seen as one who has committed an abomination and required to come back to the fold as soon as ‘fire brigadely’ possible.
The Kingdom of God does not seek double standards. Therefore, hating what God has created as a great part of life because there’s no religious trace in it is the greatest hypocrisy ever! Because, looking at it, Christains do secular things everyday… Use roads, read books, build mansions, visit the grocery store, etc. Our lives everyday is garnished with all forms of secularity.
That said,
Change is what the society thrives on and we need a variety of options to choose from. We need Love first before religion. So try, listen without any myopic bias, to the lyrics of a love song. You may learn, through the secular way, without certain compromises, how better to live as a Christain. Thus, fulfilling the ultimate Christain calling… “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37) and the second which is equally a great commandment as the first and which many Christians fall short on… “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:39)
Honor your talents all ye musicians. You were blessed with it for the sole reason of speaking reality in ways other persons may not be able to. We know that religion especially Christianity, frowns at anything without the name of Jesus literally spelled out on it. We know, we see. But, unfortunately, still, …“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” (Matthew 7:21).
If you catch the drift, the most important thing here is to discover God’s path for you and walk in it, fulfilling every bit of scripture written in your stars. Doing God’s perfect will for you, which is first, to live abundantly without fear, dominating the “secular” world and leading your own specially assigned pack, with the truth always! Not everyone will tell you but this, just this, my dear, is honourable.
